Ways to Best Whiten Teeth At Home

Let's face it. Having your pearly whites whitened at the dentist can cost you huge amounts of money per dental session. Because of these, whitening systems for home use are becoming more and more popular.

According to Dr. Harold Katz, Founder of the California Breath Clinics, studies and experiments have shown that some home based teeth whitening products can work as well and as in-office whitening systems but at a way cheaper cost.

Here are the three commonly used types of home-based products that are advertised to be the formula that can best whiten your teeth and the pros and cons of using them.

The first among these products is called "brush on whitening". This type of whitening teeth product works best by leaving it on the teeth overnight after application. This is normally applied for a certain period of days and is convenient to use especially for people who want their teeth to whiten without so much fuss, time and money (it is one the cheapest!). But, there are some things people do not usually know about "brush-on" products that do not make them good products to whiten teeth.

"Brush-on" whitening products work effectively when they are dried on the teeth. The problem with this is that, we are not sure if we can control ourselves from licking our teeth or not allowing our saliva to pass through in between our teeth when we are sleeping. The whitening product can be rubbed off such that the resulting whitened teeth will not be good - uneven and blotched.

Aside from this, another flaw of "brush on teeth" whitening products are the ingredients. These contain alcohol that is not good to for the breath. This is one reason why you should avoid using mouthwash solutions that have alcohol in them. Alcohol is used to dry the whitening product on your teeth effectively so that it remains on your teeth overnight but this can affect the condition of your gums and breath. Moreover, "brush on teeth" whitening may not be good for you especially if you already have sensitive teeth because of the presence of the ingredient, glycerin in the formula. Glycerin takes out the moisture of the teeth's enamel and is the main cause of sensitivity of patient's tooth when they undergo teeth whitening.

The second home-based product that is a good way to whiten teeth are whitening strips. These whitening products for nice, white teeth are usually comprised of 2 strips - one for the lower teeth and the other for the upper ones.

The disadvantage of using these strips is that it cannot cover the grooves and recesses in between every tooth which results to uneven whitening and more pronounced cracks in between each tooth.

The third home based product for teeth whitening are bleaching gels in trays. This is usually what most dentists recommend as the best whitening tooth product that can be used at home. Your dentist can be asked to create your tray for you from a cast made from your teeth. But, there are products available in the market now that allow you to make impressions of your teeth at home.

Most of the time, the bleaching gels that are used by dentists have the same formula as home-based products. These teeth whitening gels for work best if it has, at least, 21 percent concentration. This guarantees a shorter amount of time for the whitening agent to work.

Here are some tips you have to remember when using bleaching gels and trays when whitening your teeth:

  1. Before bleaching, use oxygenating toothpaste to brush your teeth. This toothpaste should contain a formula that naturally polishes the teeth and it should also contain aloe vera in order to strengthen your gums and to prevent sensitivity from occurring in the teeth.
  2. The tray that you use for this home-based procedure should form-fit your mouth. Make sure they snugly fit around all your teeth and they have been made according to your bite. Check if the tray firmly presses the sides of your gums and teeth.
  3. When purchasing a bleaching gel, look for the formula that has 21 percent concentration. It is best to avoid those that contain glycerine so look for a bleaching gel with a carbamide peroxide base.
  4. After bleaching your teeth, rinse these by using and oxygenating oral wash. Avoid using a mouthwash that has alcohol in it because this can affect the bleaching process.
