Whitening Teeth: The Way to a Great Smile

What is in a smile? A smile is a direct expression of one's emotion. When people smile at you, there is an effect on you that is much different compared to frowning or showing no emotions at all.

A smile can close a business deal. A sincere smile can win an election. A boss who frequently smiles to his employees goes a long in boosting their performance at work. When parents get home after a tiring day at work, their kids greets them with their warm smiles and all their stress is gone. The best smile makes the difference in winning a beauty pageant. A smile can make or break someone’s heart.

So what's the secret to a perfect smile? Simple, a nice set of pearly white teeth.

But for some, having white teeth is not that simple. If you smoke like a chimney, hate brushing your teeth while eating chocolates and sweets all the time, shy away from dental clinics, and to sum it up, have a bad dental hygiene, chances are you do not smile a lot because you are ashamed of your yellow and decay-filled teeth. If you belong to the "no smiling" crowd, you should take note of this. Also for those who have shiny white teeth, you need this to maintain it.

So what is the first step towards having purely white teeth? See your dentist now!

There are four common types used by dentist in teeth whitening.

1. The dental office teeth whitening.

This is usually the best choice for people who have an urgent need to whiten their teeth. It takes about one to hours for the dentist to apply a strong bleaching compound then directing light or laser on it. The next day, you will be surprised to see your teeth in the mirror whiter. You can keep on setting up appointments with your dentist until you are truly satisfied with your smile brought about by white teeth.

2. Paint-on teeth whiteners

As the name suggests, your dentist will literally paint your teeth with the whitening paint. It will then solidify around your teeth making it whiter.

3. Tray-based whitening system

The tray-based whitening system is the most common method done by dentists in teeth whitening.

In this technique, the dentist uses a plastic tray containing whitening gel. The small tray is then fitted on the patient’s teeth. The tray should be worn for some time depending on how much darkened the teeth are. For some it takes just hours, for others it takes weeks. Let your dentist examine it regularly until you get the desired result.

4. Teeth whitening strips

Teeth whitening strips are made of thin pieces of plastics that are flexible. It is coated with a film of the bleaching agent, hydrogen peroxide, on one side. Instead of putting a tray on the teeth as in the tray-based whitening system, the strip is the one that releases the whitening agent.

The whitening kit has two types of strips. In a whitening strip kit, half of its strips are for the upper set of teeth. The other half is formed to match the lower set of teeth.

These strips should be in place for a duration of 30 minutes each day, two times per day. There are different teeth whitening strips kits. Some kits contain strips that are coated with six percent hydrogen peroxide. This should be worn for 14 days. Other kits have strips with ten percent whitener to be placed on the teeth for 7 days. If the desired effect is achieved in a lesser number of days, it can be removed anytime.

So do you want your smile to change your life for the better? Go and see your dentist and ask for advice on which teeth whitening treatment is best for you.

Remember, keep on smiling and the world will smile at you…that is if you have a nice set of white teeth.
